Various Dance Styles To Choose From
We value versatility in dance training and believe strongly in age-appropriate instruction and choreography.
Ballet class will focus on developing fine motor skills as well as implementing ballet positions and movements that are foundational to the technique. Dancers will also work to refine upper and lower body coordination in stationary and locomotive movement. Class will follow a structured progression of warming up, learning, and exploring new skills while practicing class etiquette. Our ballet classes incorporate a mix of ballet styles; however, universal steps, technical foundation and vocabulary are a priority. In TDC's more advanced classes, dancers will work to learn more intricate concepts and will be expected to think through movement quality and how physics, like the rule of opposition, apply to the execution of their movements and placement.
Teacher recommendation only. Going "en pointe" means dancers will stand on the tip of their toes in pointe shoes. The class will focus on improving strength in the feet and ankles through the practice of traditional ballet steps and movement combinations.
Contemporary dance is a style of expressive dance that combines elements of several genres including modern, jazz, lyrical and classical ballet. Contemporary dancers strive to connect the mind and the body through fluid dance movements. The majority of this class will be spent on movement patterns and choreography. The students will learn how to move in and out of the floor safely, find stability and freedom in their dancing, and transition smoothly between movements. A goal for this class will be to gain confidence in personal artistry and movement dynamics.
Hip Hop dance refers to street dance styles primarily performed to hip-hop music or styles that have evolved as part of hip-hop culture and made popular by dance crews in the United States. Class will follow a warmup with basic hip hop steps and grooves. Students will learn to isolate certain parts of the body, practice directional changes, learn and explore new skills while practicing classroom etiquette. Learning to put combinations of steps together and presenting choreography is a main part of this class.
Jazz dance combines ballet technique with current forms of popular dance. Students will use foundational skills from technique classes, working to move with strength and fluidity, and to find stability and freedom in dancing. A brief warm-up or practice of technique exercises will be followed by across the floor combinations to practice emphasized techniques. Dancers will also learn choreography or movement phrases to gain confidence in personal artistry, and movement dynamics will be a main part of this class.
Tap dance is a style of dance in which dancers wearing shoes with heel and toe taps create audible beats by rhythmically striking the floor. Body coordination, rhythm, tempo, and clarity in sounds are goals for this class. Universal tap steps and retention of terminology are important goals for the class. More complex rhythmic patterns will be taught as the dancers advance in this style.
Acrobatics in its most simple translation is similar to the floor work of gymnastics. Acro helps our dancers develop artistic use of movements, tricks and tumbling while focusing on dance related lines within the skills given. Overall conditioning, flexibility, strengthening, limbering, balancing and tumbling skills are part of this class. Students will also work independently to accomplish the drills within each level of the acro program before moving to the next level within the class.
JLT stands for jump, leaps, and turns. Class time is spent on full body placement, balance, proper technique, strengthening and flexibility exercises followed by progressions of jumps, leaps and turns applied in many of our dance classes.
This class will focus on pom technique common in cheerleading, dance team, and drill teams. Students will learn clean, sharp, strong, and precise motions while also reinforcing technical skills like jumps, leaps, turns, and acrobatic tricks and skills. Some class time will also be dedicated to cardio, strength, and conditioning training. Students will learn pom and dance choreography, which combine pom technique, skills, and jazz dance elements.
Musical Theatre is a jazz-based class filled with Broadway style dancing and music. Students will work on choreography from a variety of Broadway Shows, learning the show's story and history. Musical Theatre class will emphasize performance skills such as facial expressions, body language and connecting with the audience. Singing will not be a requirement for this class, however, lip syncing will sometimes be incorporated.
